This week, I bring you a cake inspired by one of the Kizmet panel judges, Miss Cierpich (aka Glameow). Reason being, she provided me one of the featured ingredients as a birthday gift last year and (coincidentally?) suggested a similar play on the flavours last week when I emailed the panel for some inspiration. This weeks treat is a ricotta cake filled with a strawberry basil balsamic jelly frosted with a ricotta frosting topped with a strawberry slice and basil leaf.

The panel:
"Sour milk, bad cottage cheese", just a couple description of the visual effect the frosting on the cake conveyed this week. Mixed reviews with regards to the moisture content and overall flavour profile as the strong components were hit or miss with certain palates. Most agreed however that the recipe had serious potential.
Kara: "My favorite bite was one with the basil leaf- I was on the fence about eating it because of the powerful flavor, but it complimented the sweetness of the cake/frosting and was a nice kick to the taste buds."
Diana: "[The concept] was a grown up cupcake. It felt mature and decadent."
My comments:
I absolutely LOVED my basil balsamic strawberry jam! The combination of flavours here was fantastic, the overall product though had much more potential. I was thoroughly disappointed with the frosting on this one, it was quite lumpy and unattractive. Of course, a week later I managed to perfect it in a separate recipe, hence, The Cierpich will require revisiting.
